An article by Chris Sinacola has been printed in the Sunday, April 3, 2005 edition of the Worcester Telegram and Gazette, titled Owner of underground chamber is willing to sell. It reports that the famous Upton Chamber has been offered for sale to the Town of Upton by the property owner, Gerald Cuccione, an investor from Rhode Island. The asking price is $550,000. Quoting from the article:

Barbara E. Burke, chairman of the Upton Historical Commission, says discussions with Mr. Cuccione have been cordial — both sides recognizing that the site has tremendous historical value.

Mrs. Burke said that while she and many others in town would love to acquire the site, the Historical Commission, at least for now, does not plan to ask town meeting for the money to purchase it. Instead, once the spring rains are past and the water inside the chamber drains away, the commission plans further study of the structure by an expert from the Public Archaeological Laboratory Inc. of Pawtucket, R.I.

Mr. Cuccione is said to be willing to work with the town “as much as he possibly can,” he cautions, however, that he has already invested a substantial sum in upgrading the surrounding property, and could make “considerably more money if it were sold for development.” He says that the layout of the parcel makes it very difficult to partition the piece of the property on which the Chamber is situated from the rest of the lot.
