The subject of rocks that look like female and male sexual organs is vague, because there is no proof that prehistoric Americans would have seen rocks in this way. The subject is also sensitive because of the modern connotations of these things. However in the study of Hindu religions (where the word for the female "Yoni" and male "Lingam" come from) it is a necessary topic, and in the study of the prehistoric Americans it appears to also be important. Here are some very suggestive pictures. What kind of proof, beyond their appearance, can be given? Some of the following examples are natural, others are clearly artifacts. We try to see such rocks in contexts of recognized American Indian artifacts: corn grinding bowls and rock stacks. The last example is from Africa, found in a context of many petroglyphs. The American examples of phalluses are recumbent, which may be particular to this area.

Comment: This picture is originally an illustration of a community, combining Native American artifacts (the corn grinding bowl in the foreground under the fallen branch) and Colonial artifacts (the stone wall spur coming forward and to the right of the large erratic boulder). Some time after taking the picture I noticed that the large erratic is divided by a natural crack, making it look like a Yoni. A friend commented that the stone wall could actually be a "lingam" mated to the large rock. This gives a sexual overtone to the joining of a rock and a wall, something whose meaning we seek.

Comment: I cleaned the debris off of this natural rock. It lies across
a path from a large vandalized erratic. This is one hill away from the
previous example. Both near Hanscom Airfield.
A Phallus in a Stone Wall, Acton MA
Comment: The gray rocks in a stone wall cradle an elongated red-brown
stone, shaped like a phallus. The impression that the red rock is a deliberate
phallus is strengthened when noticing the two abstract "balls", one
black and one white, aligned perpendicularly to the right of the phallus
and touching it. Remembering that the Indian sacred colors are: red, yellow,
black, and white, we observe that only yellow is missing. We also guess
the makers of the wall were aware of the humor of leaving this in plain
site where the white men would not see it. An interesting logo is suggested:
A Rock Stack Phallus, Acton MA
Comment: This large rock is in an area of several rock stacks on boulders,
and rock stacks between boulders. In this case one of a pair of such boulders
has a "head" made by deliberate breakage along both sides of a natural
crack. If this is a deliberate representation, it is of a circumcised phallus.
The rock is about 8 feet long.
